ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal, July 24 (PIA) — In observance of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, the provincial government and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office awarded plaque of appreciation and cash incentives to differently-abled champion athletes during the flag raising rites held on June 22 here.
The athletes were winners in the recently concluded Philippine Sports Commission-Sport for Differently Abled (PSC-PHILSPADA) National Games held at Laguna Sports Complex in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.
Gold medal winners on their respective category were Fidelyn Mae Baradan (Javelin and Discus Throw), Agustin Kitan (Powerlifting), Sixto Ducay (1500-Meter Dash) and Gerardo Gonzalo (Shot Put). Silver Medalist were Desiree Gretchen Umali (Running and Discus Throw), Michael Villar (Javelin and Discus Throw) and Martin Cuison (Table Tennis),while Sagon Rodulfo won the bronze medal (800-Meter Run and 200-Meter Dash).
Multi-titlist were Jan Cris Yape (Long Jump, Javelin and Running), Mark Gil Apurillo (100-Meter Dash, 150-Meter Dash and Long jump) and Dave Salanda (Shot Put and Discus Throw) who won both gold and silver medals. The delegation was led by Ms. Gloria Raquel.
Present during the awarding event were Gov. Rebecca “Nini” Ynares, National Council for Disability Affairs (NCDA) officer-in-charge of the Office of the Executive Director Carmen Subiaga, President Melchor Superada of the Rizal Council of Persons with Disabilities (RCPWD), students from the University of Rizal System-Special Education Program and delegations from both NCDA and RCPWD.
On her speech, Gov. Ynares gave words of encouragement for both abled and differently-abled persons to overcome their fear and continue to live as normal human being. She promised to NCDA and RCPWD leaders and delegates of full support to their programs and advocacies and the protection of the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
As per Republic Act 361 and Executive Order No. 35, the third week of July is celebrated as National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week. The Rizal provincial government also follows the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, in which 1% of employment allocation in both public offices and private companies is allotted to PWDs.
