CAINTA, Rizal, Feb. 23 (PIA) — President Benigno Aquino III witnessed the awarding of persons with disability (PWD) achievers at the Tahanang Walang Hagdan’s (TWH) 40th anniversary on February 22 in this municipality.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman awarded plaques of awards to Adeline Dumapong of Kiangan, Ifugao; Rex Bernardo of Daet, Camarines Norte; Domingo Literal of Pilar, Sorsogon; Dr. Enrique Ampo of Cagayan de Oro City; Edward delos Santos of La Trinidad, Benguet; and to the family of posthumous awardee Engr. The President expressed gratitude during his speech to TWH’s Sister Valeriana Baerts for her advocacy as well as the Japanese Embassy, Swiss Solidarity through the Christian Blind Mission, We Help Germany in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the German government, and the House with No Steps of Australia for their assistance.
He added that new facilities acquired through various grants such as additional equipment, a new training center, a second floor for the metalcraft workshop, an evacuation area in case of emergencies or calamities and administration building will help improve the jobs of the workers.
President Aquino also said that the government will continue to work hard to support the PWD sector which comprises of more or less 1.5 million of the country’s population.
“Concrete proof of this (support) is the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. Out of the 3.8 million household beneficiaries of the program this January, over 193,800 households have PWD members. This means that these numbers of families are being given support in their health and education needs,” the President said.
Vocational rehabilitation centers which hone the capabilities of PWDs were also mentioned by the President namely, two in the National Capital Region and one in Regions 1, 7 and 9 respectively.
“The good news is that for year 2012 we have helped 741 people. In Region 9, most graduates already have jobs as instructors in other centers for PWDs with the help of the local governments,” Aquino said.
The President also acknowledged Tahanang Walang Hagdanan President and CEO Manuel “Noli” Agcaoili for his contributions for the PWD sector. Also present during the event were Rizal Governor Jun Ynares III, Congressman Joel Roy Duavit, and Cainta Mayor Ramon Ilagan. (CPG/GG-PIA 4A)
