URS-Morong hosts DOST-Rizal metrology seminar

ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal, Feb 7 (PIA) — Department of Science and Technology-Rizal held a metrology training seminar for treasurers and selected LGU employees of Rizal for accurate and efficient measurements and calibration in establishments in the province.

The seminar, held in cooperation with DOST-Calabarzon and University of Rizal System-Morong, was conducted February 7 to 8 to train local representatives in metrology, the field of knowledge involving measurements, which is commonly used in markets.

According to DOST-Rizal Provincial Director Fernando Ablaza LGUs should be properly equipped and trained to perform calibration, inspection, and monitoring of measurements in various establishments.

“Aside from markets, metrology may also be applied in the calibration of gas stations and laboratories,” said Director Ablaza.

Proper knowledge of LGUs in metrology can help protect local consumers from improper calibration of weighing scales in markets and gasoline pumps in gas stations through inspection and calibration.

The director also stated that DOST metrology trainings are being held nationwide. DOST leads seminars on measurements and calibration as the chair of the National Metrology Board.

NMB is an entity charged with metrology in the country formed together with the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Health, Department of the Interior and the Local Government, Department of Justice, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Agriculture through RA 9236 otherwise known as the National Metrology Act of 2003.

According to resource speaker and Science Research Specialist II Fjorda Kim Rubian DOST-Calabarzon is active in holding seminars in all provinces of the region since the creation of the NMB.

“The current training serves as a refresher for LGU employees who have attended previous seminars as well as an introduction to new gov’t employees to metrology,” said Rubian.

DOST-Calabarzon’s Regional Metrology Laboratory is also open to LGUs in need of assistance and guidance in calibration and may be reached through landline number (049) 536-8091 or may be visited at RML Bldg.. DOST Calabarzon Complex, Jamboree Road, Timugan, Los Banos, Laguna. (GG-PIA4A)
